In 1919, Walter Gropius founded the “Staatliches Bauhaus” in Weimar. In 1925, the school of art and architecture moved to its most productive location in Dessau.

In addition to the Bauhaus and the Masters’ Houses, the city commissioned the director Walter Gropius and later his successor Hannes Meyer to take on numerous public building projects. Germany’s first employment office, the Törten housing estate, the arcade houses and the Kornhaus restaurant were built. Dessau is
the only place where almost all the Bauhaus buildings that are now icons of 20th century architecture were built.

In 1996, the Bauhaus building and the Masters’ Houses were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The arcade houses were added in 2017.

Since September 2019, the Bauhaus Museum Dessau has been exhibiting an extensive collection of Bauhaus objects – the second largest collection in the world after Berlin – in Dessau.
