PREMIERE 04.04.25 | 19.30 | My Fair Lady | Großes Haus | RESTTICKETS
Musical by Frederick Loewe

The musical My Fair Lady was published in 1956 as an adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s comedy Pygmalion. The musical is set in early 20th century London and tells the story of the flower girl Eliza Doolittle, who is taken under the wing of the philologist Professor Higgins for an experiment. Professor Higgins bets his friend Colonel Pickering that he will manage to turn the simple flower girl with her vulgar dialect into a lady who is even capable of mastering the diplomatic ball at Buckingham Palace.

Eliza agrees to the experiment in the hope of escaping her precarious circumstances. She moves in with Professor Higgins and from now on is subjected to a harsh and at times humiliating phonetic drill. Nevertheless, she manages to break through. Her first test is the traditional horse race at Ascot, where her unconventional manner attracts the attention of young Freddie Eynsford-Hill, who becomes her admirer. After Eliza has captivated everyone at the diplomatic ball, however, it is not her but the professor who is congratulated on the success of his experiment. She leaves the house with the feeling that she has merely been used as a pastime for the two bachelors. Professor Higgins, on the other hand, has to admit to himself that the object of his experiment has become something more and that he really misses Eliza as a person.
The story of Eliza Doolittle and Professor Higgins is an adaptation of the ancient Pygmalion myth from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, which tells how the ancient sculptor Pygmalion falls in love with a lifelike statue he has created, which is brought to life by Venus, the goddess of love.

05.04.25 | 17.00 | Tanzt! Dance! Dances! | Großes Haus | An international dance evening with choreographies by Stefano Giannetti, Nunzio Impellizzeri and Yaron Shamir

“A showcase of versatility and an aesthetic delight.” – Joachim Lange, MZ
Movement can be, contain and mean many things. A gesture, a departure, a change. Different things move us, drive us and everyone moves in their own unique way. “I’m not interested in how people move, but in what moves them” – with these words, dance legend Pina Bausch commented not only on the art of dance, but also on the art of choreographing and staging a piece and reaching people emotionally.

Together with guest choreographers Nunzio Impellizzeri and Yaron Shamir, ballet director and chief choreographer Stefano Giannetti is creating an evening of three contemporary dance choreographies in which each of the choreographers expresses their own understanding of movement on stage. When creating his pieces, the Italian Nunzio Impellizzeri is strongly influenced by the visual arts. Great attention to detail and his innovative use of space characterize his choreographic works. With the help of intense physicality and complex dance patterns, he is able to shape and transform the respective space with his special language of movement. The Israeli choreographer Yaron Shamir follows his artistic impulses and develops his own forms to express his personal and social messages through movement, dance and choreography. For him, movement is a way of representing himself and the reality around him without having to find words for it.

This is how Tanzt! Tanzt! Tanzt! is an evening by three choreographers that will not only set the Dessau ballet ensemble in motion, but will also move the audience.
