Plenty of youngsters at Dessau Zoo

Despite the cold winter days, there have been numerous offspring at Dessau Zoo in recent weeks. It all started with the capybaras. A small female was born and thus concluded the G-naming year at Tierpark Dessau with the name ‘Gretchen’, as the birth date was still last year.

The first young animals in 2025 were born to the Karakul sheep on 26 and 29 January. The two females were given the names ‘Hildegard’ and ‘Heidi’.

For the first time in its 67-year history, Dessau Zoo can announce the birth of offspring among the dromedaries. Dromedary mare Mandy gave birth to a little dromedary stallion on 8 February. Dromedary mare Annett also followed a few days later with the birth of a stallion. Unfortunately, he only survived a few days. ‘Henry’ can now be seen for hours on end in the outdoor enclosure. ‘The whole zoo team is very proud of this first offspring among the dromedaries,’ says zoo manager Jan Bauer. This makes it all the more important for the small group of dromedaries in Dessau to have a new stable in which the growing group also has sufficient space and protection.

It was only by chance that the keepers realised that there were also new cubs in the bear house. On 5 February, they heard some telltale noises from little bear cubs in the bear room. Unfortunately, mum bear Anastasia cannot be seen on the camera at the moment, as this winter she has opted for a neighbouring box, where there is only an internal camera that does not send her pictures to the internet.

The Blacknose sheep and the Harz goats, which have a total of seven cute lambs, have now extended the birth programme.

The onset of spring is already clearly visible in the delicate splendour of the flowers. The early bloomers are a major embellishment to the entire area and whet the appetite for more. And there is more day after day, week after week. Enjoy spring all round at Dessau Zoo. It’s simply part of the season here.
